SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Name the top five quarterbacks in college football. Tyler Huntley should be on your list.

The list most would give starts with Joe Burrow of LSU, Justin Fields of Ohio State, Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama and Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma, but Utah’s Huntley has made a strong case for himself during his senior season.

Huntley belongs on that list and the numbers back up him up.

  • 2nd in the FBS in completion percentage (73.8 percent; 141-191)
  • 4th in yards-per-pass attempt (10.80)
  • 6th in passing efficiency (182.5).
  • 5th in ESPN’s Total QBR (89.5)
  • 10th in passing yards per completion
  • 1st in completion percentage on third down (76.9)

He’s accounted for 15 touchdowns (11 passing, 4 rushing) and thrown for more than 2,000 yards. He has only thrown one interception this season. Huntley had 149 passing attempts before throwing his first pick in the seventh game of the season against Arizona State.

Huntley is leaving his mark in the Utah record book. He has 20 career wins entering Utah’s game Saturday against UCLA. One more win ties him with Alex Smith for third in school history.

The senior leader has shown things that can’t be measured with stats. He has a high football IQ, leadership and toughness.

Huntley has played hurt since the Arizona State game but continues to play at a high level and the Utes offense continues to roll. He didn’t miss a single game and just a few snaps despite the injury.

Huntley elevated his play as a senior and placed himself among the elite quarterbacks in the country. He is one reason why the Utes are Pac-12 Championship contenders and in the Top 10 of the College Football Playoff rankings.
