AMERICAN FORK, Utah – The first round of the high school playoffs are in the books and the American Fork Cavemen are in pursuit of their second-straight trip to Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Cavemen made it to the state championship game last year, but fell to Lone Peak in the final game.
The Cavemen took care of business Friday afternoon beating the Clearfield Falcons 49-3.
American Fork forced a three-and-out on Clearfield’s first series, then marched downfield to take a 7-0 lead behind a 13-yard touchdown pass from Maddux Madsen to Devin Downing.
Capitalizing on miscues by the Cavemen defense, the Falcons answered with a clock-eating 14-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off-the-clock, resulting in a 39-yard field goal.
But with the ball back in their hands, American Fork completed back-to-back passes to Devin Downing to take a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.
After surrendering the long drive, American Fork’s defense stepped up. Sam Hafen picked off Shaydn Stoker and made a house call to take a 21-3 lead.
Madsen finished the day throwing for four touchdowns, and running back Jaxon Gregory added two scores of 51 and 11-yards in the win.
American Fork advances to the second round and hosts Roy next Friday.
Pleasant Grove Tops Taylorsville
Just up the road, American Fork’s Region 4 rival, Pleasant Grove hosted Taylorsville in the opening round of the playoffs. Friday’s game against Taylorsville was Pleasant Grove’s first home playoff game since 2008.
Pleasant Grove got off to a fast start scoring 20 points in the first quarter behind two touchdown passes from quarterback Caleb Campbell.
In the second quarter, the offense kept rolling. The Vikings outscored Taylorsville 21-6 to take a 41-6 lead at halftime.
The second half continued in the same fashion. 21 more points for the Vikings and a second half shutout result in a 62-6 win.
Caleb Campbell threw for four touchdowns, and his backup Eavn Robinson threw for a touchdown and added another on the ground in the win.
The Vikings hit the road in the second round to face Syracuse. The Region 1 champs beat Cyprus 49-7 in the first round of the playoffs.
