PROVO, Utah – Former BYU men’s basketball head coach Dave Rose suffered a major heart attack. Rose’s wife, Cheryl, announced the news via an Instagram post late on Wednesday night.

“Early Tuesday morning Dave had a heart attack,” Cheryl wrote. “The doctors used words like severe, major and widow maker but they went to work and gave us more time together. We are overwhelmed by the love and support from so many and most of all your prayers! Grateful for some incredible guys that stopped by to cheer us up but most of all I’m grateful for my guy! He’s the best and I’m so glad he’s still here!”

Former BYU assistant coach under Rose, Tim LaComb, tweeted that he saw Coach Rose on Wednesday and that “he looks awesome” and “is one tough dude!”

The former coach was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in June 2009. He coached the Cougars later that year.

Rose was the head coach for the BYU men’s basketball team from 2005-2019. He took over as the lead man after serving as an assistant coach in Provo under Steve Cleveland from 1997-2005.

Rose led the Cougars to 20 wins or more in each season except his last. He won his 300th game as collegiate head coach on February 4, 2017.

He was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year three times. He won four regular season MWC championships leading the Cougars.

Under Rose, BYU made the NCAA Tournament eight times.

He announced his retirement from coaching on March 26, 2019.
