PROVO, Utah – After a career performance against nationally-ranked Boise State, BYU junior tight end Matt Bushman was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week in college football for week eight.
Bushman had 101 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions on five catches in BYU’s win over the Broncos. It was the first time in Bushman’s career he had a game with over 100 receiving yards.

The former Freshman All-American back in 2017 now leads BYU in receiving yards on the year. Through seven games, Bushman has 398 receiving yards on 28 catches and three touchdowns.
Bushman’s two touchdown catches against Boise State were on “trick” plays that had the Bronco defense confused. Bushman found himself wide open on both touchdown grabs that were thrown by redshirt freshman quarterback Baylor Romney.
It was a much-needed win for a BYU team that ended a three-game losing streak and it’s not a coincidence that on a week they had one of their best-receiving threats heavily involved in the offense, the Cougars came away with a victory.
For his career, Bushman now has 1,429 receiving yards on 106 receptions, which is good for 13.5 yards per catch. Bushman ranks seventh all-time among tight ends in BYU history for receiving yards and is 30th for all players in school history.
