Park City Tops 4A After Undefeated Season
Salt Lake City, UTAH – The Utah High School Activities Association has released its final RPI ranking for the 2019 football season. The Park City Miners earn the top seed in the 4A classification after a perfect 10-0 regular season.
Beginning with the 2019-20 academic year, the UHSAA changed the seeding format for the state tournament for baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball, and volleyball.
Previously, the top four teams from each region earned bids to the postseason, but in the new RPI format, every team earns a spot in the postseason. Seeding is determined based on RPI rankings.
RPI is based on winning percentage, opponents winning percentage, and opponents’ opponents winning percentage.
First Round Byes
In the new format, teams can earn first round byes in the state tournament. In 4A, ten teams earned first round byes: Park City, Sky View, Dixie, Green Canyon, Pine View, Stansbury, Mountain View, Desert Hills, Snow Canyon, and Tooele.
Returning To Rice-Eccles
Defending 4A champion, Orem, has moved to 5A after realignment this offseason. The 4A field returns three teams that earned trips to Rice-Eccles Stadium in 2018 in Park City, Dixie, and Pine View. Those three teams earned top-five seeds this season and have their eyes set on a return trip to Rice-Eccles Stadium in 2019.
Dates and Locations
Home teams host games in the first three rounds of the playoffs. The first round is scheduled for October 25th.
