PROVO, Utah – Both BYU quarterbacks that appeared in the USF game last week, Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney are practicing right now. But there’s no official word on who will be the starter this Saturday against the No. 14 Boise State Broncos.

“No announcement (on the starter). Jaren (Hall) practiced today and took reps yesterday too. But we’ve given reps to all three guys this week,” said BYU passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Aaron Roderick.

Last week in the loss at USF, Hall started the game but had to leave in the fourth quarter after hitting his head hard on the field. The redshirt freshman from Spanish Fork immediately entered protocol to be tested and analyzed for any head injuries he might have suffered.

Baylor Romney stepped in for Hall on the final two offensive drives of the game and showed well.

Roderick said that the reps were for the most part equal but noted that Hall did see more first-team reps during Wednesday’s practice.

The one hang-up for Hall right now is that he needs to be cleared from protocol and when he will be cleared is unclear at the moment.

“It’s really no timeline. It’s just a matter of day-by-day diagnosing the symptoms. If there are no symptoms on a day then you’re able to practice. That’s kind of how it is now,” said Hall after practice on Wednesday.

BYU offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes did not want to divulge too much but also noted that Hall practiced the past two days.

If BYU turns to Baylor Romney as the starter on Saturday against the Broncos, he will be the third different starting quarterback for the Cougars this season. The last time BYU started three different quarterbacks in a season was two years ago. In 2017 BYU finished with a 4-9 record.

Roderick said that Romney is a good athlete and their offense doesn’t change if he is in the game.

Sophomore Joe Critchlow is the third quarterback receiving reps this week. Critchlow was one of three quarterbacks two years ago to start at quarterback for the Cougars. He hasn’t played in a game since that season.

Last week, Hall threw for 148 passing yards and ran for 83 to lead BYU in both categories. Romney was 6-of-10 for 73 yards in his two drives.

BYU hosts Boise State this Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. (MT). For more information on how to watch and attend the game check out KSL Sports’ Week 8 local college football viewing guide.
