SOUTH JORDAN, Utah – Entering Friday night, only two weeks remained in the high school football regular season. As the season winds down, region races begin to clear up, but that isn’t the case in Region 3 where Bingham (5-2, 2-1), Herriman (6-2, 2-1), East (5-3, 2-1), and Riverton (6-2, 2-1) entered Friday in a four-way tie for first place with each time sporting a 3-1 record.
After losing their Region 3 opener to Herriman, the Bingham Miners have reeled off two-straight wins and had their eyes on a third-straight on senior night when they hosted the 1-6 Jordan Beetdiggers (1-2).
Amid the celebration of the departing senior class, it was still business for the Miners. That reflected in the final score with Bingham winning 31-20.
The got to work early in the game forcing a turnover on Jordan’s opening drive that resulted in a Troy Mehn-Mason Christiansen touchdown.
The senior got it done on both sides of the ball, scoring a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown, and hauling in an interception on a tipped ball.
He wasn’t the only senior with a big game for the Miners. Running back Preston Larson added two touchdowns in the win, including a 55-yard score that gave the Miners a 17-0 lead in the first quarter.
Bingham was in control early on, but got big plays from its defense in the second quarter to pitch a shutout in the first half. Christiansen’s interception came on a Beetdigger drive into Miner territory, and later in the quarter, Bingham forced a turnover on downs on fourth and goal.
The dominant play on both sides of the ball gave the Miners a 31-point lead in the fourth quarter before Jordan scored 20 unanswered in the final quarter.
Bingham turns its attention Copper Hills (4-5, 0-4) next Thursday.
