SPRINGVILLE, Utah – It didn’t take long for the Provo Bulldogs to make a statement against the Springville Red Devils. On the third play from scrimmage, Provo running back Dallin Havea caught a quick slant from quarterback Luke Haslem and outraced the entire defense to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.
They never looked back, beating Springville 28-22 in a game that was pivotal for the Region 8 race.
The Bulldogs dominated the first half of the game, outscoring Springville 21-0 thanks to three touchdown passes from Haslem to Havea, as well as Taylor Heiner and Ryder MacGillivray. The Bulldog defense also dominated forcing two turnovers, both on interceptions from MacGillivray.
Trailing by three touchdowns, the Red Devils desperately needed momentum in the second half, and they were able to do just that.
They received the ball to start the half and pieced together a drive that chewed seven minutes off the clock to cut Provo’s lead down to 14 points. But, Provo would bite back and extended the lead back to 21 points thanks to a 13-yard touchdown run from Havea with 7:35 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Still, Springville refused to go down without a fight.
They’d find the end zone on a 3-yard run from quarterback Peyton Murphy with just over two-and-a-half minutes left to cut the lead to 28-14. The special teams followed up with an onside kick from Kaleb Snarr which the Red Devils recovered. Springville marched down field and would find the end zone again, this time on a Murphy pass to Austin Mortensen followed by a successful 2-point attempt.
But their luck ran out on a second attempt at an onside kick and Provo would get the win.
