SANDY, Utah – After a great start to the match, Utah Royals FC couldn’t get another goal falling to the defending NWSL champions North Carolina Courage 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The Royals got on the scoreboard first with a brilliant goal by Christen Press in the 13th minute as Veronica Boquete set up the shot just outside the 18-yard box and Press fired the shot with her right foot, sending the ball to the far post.

It’s the third goal of the season for Press and her second straight game scoring a goal after scoring in the first half against Portland last week.

The Courage tied the match in the 35th minute with a goal from Kristen Hamilton to tie the match heading into halftime.

Utah hasn’t won a match since June 15th with two draws and three losses.

Hamilton assisted on the game-winning goal in the 54th minute as Jessica McDonald scored the second goal for North Carolina.

The Royals sit in sixth place in the NWSL standings and are two points behind Reign FC for fifth place.

North Carolina will stay in second place and are four points behind Portland Thorns FC for first place.

Utah will hit the road on Saturday, August 3rd against the Chicago Red Stars. The match will be streamed on tape delay at 10 p.m. on KSLSports.com and the KSL TV app. The match will be played following the conclusion of the Real Salt Lake game against New York City FC.
