SANDY, Utah – After receiving his eighth and Major League Soccer All-Star game selection, Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando continues to pile up his resume as the greatest goalkeeper in MLS history.
On the RSL Lion’s Den podcast, hosts Tom Hackett and Matt Gaschk discussed his legacy over his 19 years in the league and 12 years in a RSL uniform.
“This is a crowning moment for him,” Gaschk said on Rimando’s All-Star selection.
Rimando announced before the 2019 season, that this year will be his last in MLS.
“He is at a point in his career where there is no pressure,” Hackett said. “He has done everything that he needs to do and he is the greatest goalkeeper that MLS has ever seen.”
At 40-years old, Rimando is still playing at a high level in the league, but doesn’t have anything left to prove. He is the MLS all-time leader in wins with 213, shutouts with 146, 497 games played and 1,662 saves.
“He still has those brilliant moments in him,” Gaschk said. “As long as those things are still there. It’s so rewarding to be able to watch that first hand and see those signature Nick Rimando moments and he still has those games that he is worth the price of admission.”
The two agreed that the club should put statues of Rimando and Beckerman at Rio Tinto Stadium to honor the duo, who took Real Salt Lake from an ordinary club to an extraordinary organization.
“If you look at Real Salt Lake on the local and national level, when they think of Real Salt Lake, they think of Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando,” Gaschk added.
Real Salt Lake will face rival Sporting Kansas City at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday at 8 p.m. The match will be streamed on KSLSports.com and the KSL TV app.
