Royals’ Desiree Scott Causes Penalty Kick With Shot Attempt In World Cup

PARIS, France – In the 66th minute of the Round of 16 match between Canada and Sweden, Utah Royals FC midfielder Desiree Scott attempted a shot just outside of the box and caused the Swedish defender to use her arm, causing a handball and awarding the Canadians with a penalty kick.
Janine Beckie attempted the penalty and the goalkeeper guess right and saved the ball, keeping Sweden up 1-0 and getting the win.
They scored their only goal of the match in the 55th minute by Stina Blackstenius.
Sweden will face Germany in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Scott has played 146 international matches and has had over 100 starts. She is appearing in her third World Cup of her career.
Canada finished second in Group E with 2 wins and 1 loss, falling to the Netherlands in group play and beat Cameroon and New Zealand.
So far in the knockout round, Germany beat Nigeria 3-0 and Norway beat Australia in penalty kicks on Saturday. England beat Cameroon 3-0 and France defeated Brazil 2-1 in extra time on Sunday. The United States knocked off Spain 2-1 on Monday.
