PORTLAND, Ore. – The Utah Royals kept the Portland Thorns off the scoreboard early with a great save by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

In the seventh minute, Portland’s Midge Purce booted a left footed shot from the right side of the box that seemed destined for twine. However, Barnhart made a solid diving save to knock the ball away from danger.

Barnhart has been stellar this season. In seven games, she’s allowed just five goals and has made 20 saves.

The Royals and the Thorns are near each other in the standings. Utah sits in second place with 16 points while Portland is just behind the Royals with 15 points.

Utah continues to play without several of its star players. Four of the Royals who are competing in France for the Women’s World Cup have moved on with their teams to the Round of 16.

The Royals are currently representing in the World Cup by Becky Sauerbrunn, Christen Press and Kelley O’Hara on the U.S. national team and also by Desiree Scott, who plays for Canada.

The match between the Utah Royals and the Portland Thorns can be streamed live on or on the KSL TV app.
