PROVO, Utah – The ninth installment of BYU Football Media Day took place on Tuesday and it was a day met with a lot of optimism as the Cougars prepare for the 2019 football season.
Media Day is a great opportunity to sort through the roster and get an update on personnel since spring ball concluded last March.
Here are some personnel nuggets from Tuesday’s Media Day:
– QB/RB Beau Hoge is medically redshirting this season. His intention is to return for the 2020 season if cleared by the NCAA.
– On the status of RB Amone Finau joining BYU this fall, offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes said, “not sure yet.”
– On the status of Joe Tukuafu joining BYU this fall, Grimes said, “don’t know.”
– Incoming freshman Javelle Brown might switch to cornerback in fall camp. Same with Colorado speedster Luc Andrada. Just depends on need and numbers at cornerback.
– 2019 signee Brooks Maile has sent in his paperwork to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Pine View High School standout will return to BYU for the 2021 season.
– Cornerback Chris Wilcox’s availability for the Utah game is still up in the air according to Ilaisa Tuiaki. Wilcox is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury he suffered last season.
– Defensive back Austin McChesney’s status for the 2019 season is not yet known. McChesney had two season-ending knee injuries in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
– Preferred walk-on Brayden Keim has switched from tight end to offensive tackle. This switch took place last month.
– Offensive Guard Tristen Hoge said he’s 100-percent healthy after suffering an injury in the spring game last March.
– Isaiah Kaufusi is still a possible option at Mike Linebacker. Cougars will have Max Tooley, Jackson Kaufusi, and Payton Wilgar competing for that spot in fall camp.
