SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – After a scary incident in the Dominican Republic in which he was shot through the abdomen, baseball legend David Ortiz is in stable condition.
His former team, the Boston Red Sox, have been reported to arrange a medical air ambulance to transport the recovering future Hall of Famer to Massachusetts hospital sometime on Monday. Ortiz suffered a gunshot wound during a botched robbery while he was relaxing at an amusement center in Santo Domingo in his native land of the Dominican Republic on Sunday night.
After undergoing emergency surgery on Sunday in the D.R., Ortiz is expected to make a full recovery.

Prior to finding stardom with the Red Sox, and leading the team to three World Series titles, Ortiz was member of the Minnesota Twins and spent some time in the minors with the Triple-A Salt Lake Buzz. Ortiz spent part of the 1998 season in Salt Lake and the entire 1999 campaign with the Buzz, hitting .315 with 110 RBIs and 30 home runs.
One of the most beloved players in baseball upon his retirement in 2016, Ortiz’s close call on Sunday was met with prayers and best wishes with many of the game’s top players, including Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout, who also spent time in the minors in Salt Lake.
