Utah Royals Fall To Washington Spirit On The Road
BOYD, Md. – The two top teams in the National Women’s Soccer League battled it out with the Washington Spirit taking down Utah Royals FC 2-0.
Washington started the match strong as the aggressors and not giving Utah much possession on the ball.
Former BYU soccer star Ashley Hatch scored the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute as she passed two defenders at the top of the 18-yard box, shot the ball with her right foot and found the back of the net on the far post. That was Hatch’s third goal of the season and in as many games.
That was the score at the half.
The Royals started to find some light on potential chances to score but couldn’t convert and equalize.
Dorian Bailey put the game out of reach in the 70th minute with a goal to give the Spirit a 2-0 lead.
At the end of the match, Washington had 63 percent of possession, while Utah had just 37 percent. The Spirit had 15 shots, but just two on goal that turned into goals. The Royals had 6 shots on goal out of their total 7 shots.
Utah falls to 4-2-1 on the season and are in second place in the NWSL standings with the Spirit on top with a 5-1-1 record.
The Royals will be off for two weeks due to the FIFA Women’s World Cup. They will return home on June 15 to face Sky Blue FC at Rio Tinto Stadium at 8 p.m. on KSLSports.com or the KSL TV app.
