SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Two members of Utah State’s track and field team qualified to participate at the NCAA Championships with their performances on Friday.
Javelin thrower Sindri Gudmundsson was the first Aggie to claim a spot at Nationals with a first place finish at the NCAA West Preliminaries. It took him just one attempt to take the top spot with a distance of 73.68 meters.
After finishing third at Nationals in 2018, Gudmundsson is looking forward to gunning for a national championship in Austin, Texas in the first week of June.

“I did what I needed to do today, so I got the job done and I’m happy with it,” Gudmundsson said. “I was a lot better today than I was at conference injury-wise, so I’m just excited to go back. Texas is really fun, even though it’s really humid. It’s definitely a place I like to throw at.”
The other Aggie to qualify for Nationals on Friday was women’s steeplechase runner Cierra Simmons-Mecham, who finished third in her heat and 12th overall with a time of 9:59.22 to punch her ticket to Austin.
Eight more Aggies will be looking to advance to Nationals as the Prelims continue on Saturday.
The Nationals in Austin will take place June 5-8.
