STOCKTON, Calif. – The BYU Cougars dropped their first game of the West Coast Conference tournament with a 4-1 loss to Loyola Marymount.
The Cougars, who came into the four-team, double-elimination tournament as the No. 1 seed, will now move into the one-loss portion of the bracket. They still have a shot at winning the conference title, but the road will be much tougher now.
After a scoreless start to the game, the Lions opened up the scoring with a two-run home run by Trevin Esquerra in the top of the fourth.

The Lions added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Nick Sogard, who was later scored on a single by Esquerra.
Finally, BYU got on the board with a RBI double by Mitch McIntyre in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but that was all the Cougars could muster in the loss.
Jordan Wood was credited with the loss for BYU after throwing 4.1 innings with six hits and two earned runs allowed. LMU’s Codie Paiva got the complete game victory for the Lions and allowed just five hits over nine innings.
BYU will next face the loser of Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s on Friday. LMU will play the winner.
