CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Southern Utah Thunderbirds have booked a big-time football opponent, Arizona State, for the 2021 and 2023 seasons.
While it was previously announced that the Thunderbirds would be traveling to face Arizona State in 2023, the two schools announced another matchup for the 2021 schedule, also to be played at Arizona State.
According to SUU head coach Demario Warren, a large part of the reason why they’re heading to Tempe is to create a stronger foothold for recruiting in Arizona and also to give those on the team and staff who are from the Grand Canyon State a chance to play in front of friends and family.

“I have an immense respect for ASU’s AD Ray Anderson and head coach Herm Edwards and we are grateful and excited for for this opportunity to compete at Sun Devil Stadium,” said Warren in a press release.
For Arizona State, the decision to add the 2021 game came in part as a way to add Texas to its schedule for 2032 and 2033. As part of that deal, ASU released its previously scheduled 2021 game with the University of Louisana to Texas, which made room for the Sun Devils to add another game against SUU.
Last season, the Thunderbirds finished the year with a 1-10 overall record. Their 2019 season will kick off Aug. 31 on the road against UNLV.
