SANDY, Utah – It took nearly 84 minutes, but the Utah Royals finally scored on a goal by Amy Rodriguez in their match against the Chicago Red Stars.
Moving through the center of the box on the attacking end, Rodriguez chipped a low rolling shot that just crept past the extended grasp of Chicago goal keeper Alyssa Naeher.
The Royals played the entire second half of the game with an extra-player advantage after Chicago’s Katie Johnson was given a red card near the end of the first half after striking Utah’s Veronica Boquete with an elbow.

If the game holds to its current score, it will be the Royals’ third straight 1-0 victory to start the season.
The Royals came into their matchup against Chicago with a 2-0 record in the young NWSL season. They were playing with a heavily modified lineup after it was announced earlier this week that three of their best players, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara and Christen Press were named to the U.S. Women’s World Cup squad. As a result, the team signed three new players prior to the game on Friday.
