SANDY, Utah – The first few minutes of the Utah Royals’ match against the Chicago Red Stars was highlighted by a pair of near-goals on both ends.
In the sixth minute of the game, the Red Stars threatened to take an early lead on Utah. Chicago’s Sam Kerr fired a hard on shot on frame, but it was turned away with a spectacular diving save by Utah goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart.

Just a couple minutes later on the counter attack, Utah’s Michelle Maemone nearly finished a fantastic strike with a boot from outside the box that smacked the crossbar of the Chicago net.

The Royals came into their matchup against Chicago with a 2-0 record in the young NWSL season. They were playing with a heavily modified lineup after it was announced earlier this week that three of their best players, Becky Sauerbrunn, Kelley O’Hara and Christen Press were named to the U.S. Women’s World Cup squad. As a result, the team signed three new players prior to the game on Friday.
