SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah softball team pulled off a huge upset with a 5-4 victory over third-ranked Washington. The victory was secured with a grand slam in the sixth inning by Utah’s Alyssa Barrera.
Washington led 4-0 going into the sixth inning before the Utes mounted their comeback. With the bases loaded and with one run already on the board, Barerra blasted a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield wall to give Utah the lead.
Pitcher Hailey Hilburn came on in the seventh to close out the Huskies and ice the win with a save.

It was Utah’s first win against a top-5 team since they defeated No. 1 Arizona at home in 2017 which coincidentally was thanks to a walk off hit by Barrera.
Utah’s record improved to 15-28 overall.
The Utes are back home on Tuesday vs. Weber State at 4 p.m. for Fan Appreciation Day.
