Big Third Quarter Lifts BYU Women Past Auburn In NCAA Tourney

PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 7-seed BYU needed a big third quarter to get past No. 10 Auburn by outscoring the Tigers 23-13. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 73-64 win.
Brenna Chase dropped 19 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists, while Shaylee Gonzales added 17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals to lead BYU. Sara Hamson chipped in 4 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks.
The Cougars shot 47 percent from the field and held Auburn to just 32 percent shooting.
Strong Third Quarter Lifts Cougars
It took BYU most of the opening quarter to find their offensive rhythm but was able to close the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 13-11.
The Cougars had a 7-point lead early in the second quarter but Auburn trimmed the lead to 28-26 by halftime.
Chase was already in double figures with 10 points. Shaylee Gonzales piled up 4 points and 7 rebounds for the Cougars.
BYU had a great third quarter as they outscored the Tigers 23-13 to take a 51-39 lead.
Caitlyn Alldredge and Gonzales each reached double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Auburn got back into the game with a 22-16 run to trail by six points with 1 minute left, but BYU was able to hold off Auburn to advance to the second round.

Up Next
The Cougars improved to 25-6 on the season. They will face the winner of No. 2 Stanford and No. 15 UC Davis in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The game will be played on Monday with the time to be determined.
