6A High School Basketball Tournament First Round Wrap Up

OGDEN, Utah – The first round of the 6A tournament features eight games from the highest classification in the state of Utah.

Starting with 16 teams that all have the same goal, winning a state championship.

The first two games of the day were blowouts, but the next two were tightly contested matchups that were entertaining.

Here are the results from the action at the Dee Events Center in Ogden, Utah.

Herriman 77 – Granger 55

The Mustangs jumped out to a 9-2 lead, hitting all four attempts. Future BYU football player Blake Freeland had the first six points, two of which were dunks. Herriman never looked back as they led 44-18 at halftime. The Mustangs cruised to a 77-55 win.

Freeland finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Herriman, Kase Peterson added 15 points and 7 boards. Jael Vaughn chipped in 14 points.

Roulervee Vann led the Lancers with 36 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Up Next: Herriman will face Pleasant Grove in the second round on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Pleasant Grove 80 – Weber 56

The Vikings held the Warriors to just nine points in the second quarter while dropping 24 points. Future Utah Ute Matt Van Komen had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Kwika Akina added 16 points.

Hudson Schenck led Weber with 22 points, while Max Triplett chipped in 14 points.

Up Next: Pleasant Grove will face Herriman in the second round on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Fremont 64 – Lone Peak 53

It was a back and forth game the entire time as Fremont had a six point lead with 41 seconds left, when they made their free-throws down the stretch, picking up the win. The Silverwolves were led by Dallin Hall with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Tige Voorhees and Calvin Peterson each scored 10 points apiece.

For Lone Peak, Cameron Brimhall dropped 18 points and 6 rebounds. Hunter Hannemann added 15 points and Jaxon Pollard poured in 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Up Next: Fremont will face Riverton in the second round on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m.

Riverton 64 – Cyprus 54

The first half was back and forth but also every low scoring, especially in the first quarter. Riverton started to pull away late in the second as they had a 24-19 lead at halftime. The Pirates had a poor start to the second half as they trailed by double digits before they cut the lead to six with 5 minutes left in the game. Riverton kept the lead and picked up the win.

Dayne McDonald led the Silverwolves with 17 points, Tristyn Hymas added 11 points and 7 rebounds. For Cyprus, Tayven Aloi dropped 18 points, while Jordan Orozco chipped in 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals.

Next Up: Riverton will face Fremont in the second round on Wednesday at 5:50 p.m.

Davis 62 – Westlake 61 OT

Davis took a 14-4 lead after the first quarter, but Westlake countered by outscoring the Darts 22-9 in the second quarter.

Westlake had a chance to win the game but the potential game-winning shot was wedged between the side of the rim and the backboard.

Tyson Garff led all scorers with 27 points for the Darts. Brendon Redford added 16 points.

Tredyn Christensen scored 24 points for Westlake, while Cooper Mattson poured in 16 points.

Up Next: Davis will face Kearns in the second round on Wednesday at 4:10 p.m.

Kearns 51 – West Jordan 42

The Jaguars at 8-15 were eyeing a major upset over the Cougars. West Jordan outscored Kearns 12-3 in the opening quarter, but the Cougars answered with a 17-6 second quarter to take a 20-18 halftime lead.

Kearns pulled away in the fourth quarter by posting 20 points and limiting the Jaguars to 12.

Majok Kuath scored 15 points to lead the Cougars, while Kwo Agwa added 14 points.

For West Jordan, Hunter Sanders dropped 13 points and Jakob Josephson chipped in 10 points.

Up Next: Kearns will take on Davis in the second round on Wednesday at 4:10 p.m.

Copper Hills 58 – Hillcrest 44

Copper Hills did most of their damage in the first half by taking a 29-15 halftime lead. The second half scoring was even.

The Grizzlies were led by Perry Dettling with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Hoffman poured in 14 points and Stone Hutchings added 13 points.

Brox Ashby scored 16 points to lead Hillcrest as the only player to score in double figures.

Up Next: Copper Hills will take on American Fork in the second round on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

American Fork 80 – Layton 68

The game was even with the exception of the second quarter when the Cavemen outscored Layton 22-10.

American Fork had four players reach double figures, led by Hayden Franson with 19 points and Isaac Johnson added 15 points. Tanner Cuff chipped in 14 and Trey Stewart had 11 points.

The Lancers were led by Ethan Potter with 20 points, Collin Jeppson poured in 17 points and Tanner Kofoed had 16 points.
