Haws Leads Cougars To Overtime Win Over San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – TJ Haws had a career night in BYU’s 88-82 overtime win over San Diego.
Early on and even late in the game, it looked like the game might slip away from the Cougars.

The Cougars trailed the entire first half and allowed the Toreros to take a 39-30 lead at the halftime break.
In the first 20 minutes, BYU had a hard time keeping the ball out of their own basket as San Diego drained 54.2 percent of its shots on the floor. The Toreros were especially sharp from beyond the arc, knocking down 7-of-15 triples in the opening half.
Things continued as such to start the second half. San Diego’s Isaiah Pineiro knocked down a jumper to give the Toreros a 14-point lead with 16 minutes remaining. It looked as though they would coast to an easy win.
BYU, however, was not done yet. They worked to erase the lead and tied the game up at 67-all thanks to a 3-pointer by Haws.

The scoring slowed down considerably and with less than three minutes remaining, the Toreros again led by a 73-71 advantage.
Soon after, Haws again came up with a big shot to give the Cougars the lead at 74-73.
BYU had opportunities to increase its lead but missed a six of nine free throws late and gave the Toreros an opportunity to tie the game up at 75-all.
That’s exactly what happened as former Utah Ute Isaiah Wright drove down the lane and got his layup to fall and tie the game at 75-all with two seconds to go to force overtime.
In overtime it was all BYU as the Cougars held the Toreros without a made field goal en route to the win.
