SUU’s Winning Streak Ends At Three With Loss To Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Southern Utah saw its three game winning streak come to an end with a 84-73 loss to Sacramento State.
SUU had previously defeated the Hornets 76-71 at home on Jan. 19. In that victory, Cameron Oluytian led the charge with 21 points as the Thunderbirds had four players in double figure scoring.
In the latest edition of the Big Sky matchup between Sacramento State and Southern Utah, three Thunderbirds reached double-digit scoring, but it wasn’t enough as SUU fell on road to the Hornets.

After the game was knotted up at 8-all early on, the Thunderbirds reeled off a 17-4 run to take their largest lead of the game at 25-11 on a Harrison Butler layup.
It didn’t last as the Hornets spurted a run of their own, theirs for 14 straight points to tie the game up at 25-all with three minutes remaining in the first half.
At the break, Sacramento State held a slim 33-32 advantage.

The two teams played back and forth ball to start the second. The score was tied up at 51-all with a little less than 10 minute remaining.
The home team tooka 54-51 lead on a 3-pointer by Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’afa and would lead the rest of the way en route to a convincing 11-point victory.
The loss moved SUU to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in Big Sky Conference play.

Brandon Better led the Thunderbirds in scoring with 19 points.
Sacramento State’s Joshua Patton led the game in scoring with 22 points on 7-of-9 shooting.

The Thunderbirds will remain on the road to face Portland State on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. SUU previously defeated the Vikings 83-69 at home on Jan. 17.
