Cougars’ Winning Streak Ends In Heartbreaker To LMU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite a terrific comeback effort, the BYU women’s basketball team fell to Loyola Marymount, 61-58.
After trailing by as much as 14 in the fourth quarter, the No. 25-ranked BYU women’s basketball game dug deep and came up with a big stretch to take a two point lead with 17 seconds remaining.
While going on an 18-2 run, BYU held LMU without a made field goal for over three and a half minutes. Yet, when the Cougars’ defense finally cracked, it was devastating.

After BYU’s Paisley Johnson knocked down a free throw to give BYU a 58-56 lead, the Lions’ Jasmine Jones came down and tied the game up with a clutch layup with nine seconds remaining. To make matters worse, she was fouled on the shot and knocked down the and-one free throw to give LMU the lead again at 59-58.

Shaylee Gonzalez came down the court and attempted a reverse layup for the win with two seconds remaining but the shot was blocked and recovered by the Lions. Andee Velasco was fouled on the rebound and made two free throws with less than a second remaining to ice the game for LMU.
The loss snapped an 11-game winning streak for the Cougars, who had moved into the top 25 for the first time since 2012 before the game against LMU.
Key Stats
The Cougars mounted their noble comeback effort after trailing for most of the game. BYU was down for 36 minutes of the 40 minute game.
Johnson was the Cougars’ high scorer in the game with 16 points.

Jasmine Moody also added 13 points for the Cougars.
LMU’s Jones was the game’s high scorer with 21 points while teammate Bree Alford had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
