Is This The Best Aggie Football Team Ever?

LOGAN, Utah – Riding a 10-game winning streak, holding onto a No. 14 national ranking and heading into one of the biggest matchups in school history this Saturday against Boise State, the question must be asked: Is this the best Aggie team in Utah State history?
Among The Top Five Seasons Ever
Basically, there are five seasons to consider when answering that question. The Aggies have only been nationally ranked in the top 25 in four seasons, 2018, 2012, 1961 and 1960. Also, the 1978 Utah State squad started the season 5-0 and reached the No. 18 spot in the United Press International poll before losing and dropping out of the rankings for the rest of the season. They never reached the AP Poll that season.

Off To A Great Start
So far this season, the Aggies are off to their best start ever. They nearly knocked off Michigan State on the road to begin the year, before cranking off a 10 game winning streak that they still currently enjoy. It’s also just the third time in program history that the Aggies have won 10 games in a season. They went 11-2 in 2012 and 10-4 in 2014.
The Aggies are also setting program benchmarks in offense this season. They’re averaging 49.3 points per game, good for second in the country. They’re also finding the end zone quickly, leading the nation in scoring drives of less than a minute with 24. Both of those figures are unprecedented in program history.
Remaining Conference Play Will Be The Difference
The game against Boise State will be the deal-breaker to determine if this year’s Utah State team is the best in program history, at least when considering conference play. A win over the Broncos would give the Aggies their eighth conference win of the season, something that no Utah State win has ever done.

Depending on how the rest of the Top 25 performed in the final weeks of the regular season and into the weeks of conference championships, the Aggies could rise even higher in the rankings. If the Aggies continue to win, and in convincing fashion, a final top 10 ranking and a berth a New Year’s Six bowl isn’t out of the question.
While there are still a few games left to be played, it’s already clear, the 2018 Utah State Aggies are going to be remembered for a long time.
