MORAGA, Calif. – The Utah Valley Wolverines were blown away by mid-major power Saint Mary’s 92-63 in the first game of the MGM Resorts Main Event Sunday night.
From the get-go, UVU was in big trouble against Saint Mary’s. The Gaels built a sizable 45-23 lead into the halftime break, thanks to a 18-3 run to take a 22-8 lead just six minutes into the opening half.
Jordan Ford scored a career high 35 points to lead the Gaels. He shot 11-of-17 with four 3-pointers made.
Jake Toolson led the Wolverines with 15 points while Wyatt Lowell added 14 points off the bench.
Saint Mary’s shot 58.9 percent from the field, including 50 percent from beyond the arc. In contrast, Utah Valley shot 24-of-54 from the field, good for 44.4 percent. The Wolverines finished with nine 3-pointers made, but made just one in the first half, a microcosm of the poor outing out of the gate.
Next up as part of the tournament, Utah Valley will travel to face in-state foe Utah State Friday night in Logan.
