How Real Salt Lake Can Advance To The Western Conference Finals

SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake played Sporting Kansas City to a 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium in the first leg of the Western Conference Semifinals.
“It’s halftime right now and we are tied 1-1 going back to Kansas City,” said RSL head coach Mike Petke after the match.
Real midfielder Albert Rusnak gave RSL the lead in the 52nd minute before Sporting Kansas City forward Diego Rubio scored the equalizer nine minutes later.
How RSL Can Advance
The aggregate format is set up for the team that scores the most goals in the home-and-home series will advance to the next round.
It’s very simple for what RSL needs to do to advance to the Western Conference Final. They have to win the game.
Tiebreaker
If at the end of the second leg in Kansas City, the aggregate score is tied, the tiebreaker goes to the team who scored the most goals on the road in the two game series.
If the second leg score is 1-1, they will play two 15-minute extra time periods. If the score remains tied after the 30 minute session, both teams will settle the round in penalty kicks.
If the game ends with a 2-2 tie, Real Salt Lake will advance since they scored two goals on the road with Sporting only scoring one road goal at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The second leg will take place on Sunday, November 11. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN.
