EAST LANSING, Mich. – As has unfortunately been the case for the Utah State Aggies, they came up just short of another major non-conference upset, yet again, in a 38-31 loss to Michigan State Friday night at Spartan Stadium.
Utah State led 31-30 with 5:05 left in the game before the Spartans retook the lead with a 13-yard touchdown run by Connor Heyward. They went for two and got it, to take a 38-31 advantage with exactl two minutes to play. The Aggies, with a chance to win or retake the lead at the end of the game, unfortunately turned the ball over to give Michigan State the ball and a huge sense of relief.
Despite the late turnover and another one earlier in the game, Utah State quarterback Jordan Love played well under the pressure in front of a sold-out Big 10 stadium. He completed 29-of-44 passes for 319 yards and a rushing score.
“I think we ought to walk out of here with confidence, with our chin up and our chest out,” said head coach Matt Wells. “We came in here, we did exactly what we wanted to. We just couldn’t finish it at the very end.”
Next up for the Aggies are the Aggies from New Mexico State, who defeated Utah State in the Arizona Bowl last season. The two teams will face off Saturday in Logan.
